UK home insurance

So, you've finally achieved your dream - you've moved overseas or landed that plum job abroad. You've left your home and the grey skies of Britain and are enjoying the fruits of your labour. But one concern you may have is the protection of your UK property against things like flood, fire, theft and damage etc. The good news is that whether it has been left unoccupied or you are renting it out, there is UK home insurance for Expats available.

Unoccupied property

If you are abroad and your property has been left standing unoccupied, then it may be vulnerable to many risks. Something like a small leak which is left could eventually cause a lot of damage; in an old property, an unsafe chimney stack could cause major problems; an empty property may also attract malicious damage; there is also the very real threat of fire ... and so the list of hazards goes on.

Because of these risks - which may be more likely to happen than if a property is occupied - finding UK home insurance for an unoccupied property may often be difficult. Even your mortgage lender may be uncomfortable in offering this kind of cover, due to the perceived extra risk of a claim potentially being made.

And your traditional home insurance policy will not usually be valid once the property has been unoccupied for more than a defined period within your policy - usually 30 days.

However, should a change in your circumstances occur - such as moving or working abroad - life still goes on. And that means that there is home insurance available for your UK property, even if it is unoccupied.

And it's not just insurance for unoccupied properties that can give peace of mind to Expats - typically you can find UK home insurance for properties that are rented out too.

Rented properties

If you are abroad and are renting out your property, the last thing you will want to do is to worry about anything happening to your asset. However, rented properties are just as vulnerable to risks as any other property - perhaps even more so.

Things can happen such as fire, flood, accidental damage and theft, as well as potential claims from tenants and visitors to the property for loss or injury.

For those renting out their property, UK home insurance for Expats is available that may typically help cover these risks and, in some cases, the additional perils that a landlord may face. These may include cover for things like rental loss where a rented property is damaged and temporarily uninhabitable.
